This page is a repository of screenshots of massively multiplayer games that I haven't covered in depth in the reviews. There's more here if you're really keen. In fact, I've ceased adding screenshots to this page so that's where you'll find all of them now.

I originally had these pictures on the second version of this website when I was using a gallery program. The games featured here are/were all MMORPG's.

Dransik is a game I was singularly unimpressed with. Very much a poor man's Ultima Online. It's been renamed to Ashen Empires and seemingly gone through a few changes of ownership.

EVE Online was another MMORPG I played on the suggestion of a workmate. Extraordinarily pretty game but, to me, it came across as a relentless grind. I went a little overboard with the JPEG compression when I first took these shots and edited them, hence the horrid artifacting.

Another MMORPG I tried was Mimesis Online. It was/is an Anarchy Online wannabe. As the British would say: pants. It's been cancelled for ages now. Go figure.

I then tried out the much-maligned (and now defunct) Asheron's Call 2. Extremely pretty game and it does try hard but it feels hollow and very same-ish. To me, it's one of those things that you just want to really adore, but can't. Shame; because, like a lot of things out there, it had potential.

A Tale in the Desert was the most intriguing of this bunch. It was a social experiment and an exercise in co-operative politics more than a straight-out game. There is no combat, no fighting, no monsters. It's a pure gather and craft game. Trouble is, the gathering part involved running vast distances over great lengths of time which got old seriously fast.

The game had a fairly tight-knit community but that didn't stop me from relegating it to the "played it, never again" category. It's been remade as different and newer "tellings". Different shit, same stink, from what I can see. A game for a cult following and nobody else.

Lineage 2 looks gorgeous. Because I once subscribed to City of Heroes/Villains, I got a 14 day free trial of this game. I'd kept away from it heretofore after reading about the ho-hum gameplay in it. Yes, I can see that it'd get old fast, and the movement controls suck. Beautiful game, with few characterisation options (or gameplay for that matter). From all reports, it's a meaner spirited version of Everquest complete with shit game mechanics like grinding and de-levelling.

Talking of games with a cult following, Roma Victor was one that I tried out recently, courtesy of winning a free game account in a competition. You actually need to buy the game, although there are no monthly subscriptions, as it uses a "buy in-game money with real money" model, or VERM as the makers call it. It's a historical game based upon the Antonine days of the Roman Empire in Britain.

I can't be charitable about Roma Victor at all; it's a horrendously incomplete and unpolished product. The fanboi excuse that all MMORPGs are incomplete is an excuse worse than none, to be honest, and the other oft-thrown excuse that it was made by volunteers working for the love of it holds zero water too. Linux was a product made by volunteers for the love of it too, and need anyone comment about how well it works?

Roma Victor? Roma Victor Fututum as it stands. Easily the worst game of the lot I've mentioned here. Maybe one day it'll get better... Actually, it won't. It's been cancelled.
